Waukegan police looking for suspect in parking lot shooting

Police said Friday they are looking for a 27-year-old Waukegan man who they believe shot a 29-year-old man in the head outside a Burger King parking lot on Thursday.

Authorities have issued a $2 million warrant for the arrest of Edson Silva, of the 1300 block of Ridgeland Avenue, and plan to charge him with two counts of first-degree murder, according to a news release from the Waukegan Police Department.

Earlier Friday, police identified the victim as Shawntrell Hayes of Waukegan. Authorities believe Hayes and Silva knew each other and met about 4:50 p.m. Thursday in the restaurant’s parking lot at 3140 W. Belvidere Road.

Police Cmdr. Gabe Guzman said the two got into an argument, which led to Silva shooting Hayes in the head. Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were unsure of an exact motive for the shooting.

Investigators had recovered a 1998 full-size, GMC van they were looking for Thursday after receiving reports that a vehicle fitting that description had left the area after the shooting. Silva was identified as the van’s owner, police said.

Authorities said Silva is considered armed and dangerous and anyone who comes into contact with him should notify police.

Guzman said early reports indicate the shooting was not gang-related.
