Maine West student killed on Addams Tollway
Authorities are seeking witnesses with information about the death of a 17-year-old Maine West High School student killed early Monday when he was struck by a vehicle on the Jane Addams Tollway.
Police said the Des Plaines boy's body was lying in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 just west of the Elmhurst Road overpass about 1:30 a.m. when a car hit him. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The death, a result of multiple injuries from the collision, has been ruled a suicide, a Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman said Monday afternoon.
Des Plaines Police Cmdr. Nicholas Treantafeles said police investigating the death found the victim's vehicle still running on Elmhurst Road. Police are uncertain how the teen's body got onto the tollway, he added.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at (847) 391-5431 or (847) 391-5631.
The boy was a junior at Maine West High School in Des Plaines. Students were informed of the death Monday, Maine Township High School District 207 spokesman Dave Beery said. The school made counselors available to students and staff alike, he added.
A tree will be planted on campus in memory of the student, Beery said.
