Westmont police shoot man outside his home
Westmont police shot a 53-year-old resident in the leg early Sunday morning after he reportedly pointed what appeared to be a rifle at officers.
The shooting occurred shortly after 12:16 a.m. when officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of South Lincoln Street because of a domestic dispute, Westmont Police Chief Thomas Mulhearn said in a news release.
Upon arrival, police said, officers asked the male resident to step outside the home to speak with them.
The man exited the home holding a black object that appeared to be a rifle and pointed it in the direction of officers, police said. The officers shot at the man, striking him in the leg, the news release states.
The 53-year-old man, who police said lives at the residence alone, was taken into custody and transported to Adventist Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with what authorities called nonlife threatening injuries.
Westmont police contacted the Illinois State Police to investigate the shooting, Mulhearn states in the news release. The DuPage County State’s Attorney also is investigating.
No charges have been filed against the 53-year-old man at this time, police said.
Mulhearn indicated no further information would be released because of the ongoing investigation.
