Chicago Wolves win in shootout

The top two teams in the AHL’s Midwest Division battled to a virtual standstill Saturday night, but the Chicago Wolves gained a valuable point by capturing a 1-0 shootout victory over the Charlotte Checkers at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

With the win, the Wolves (29-18-1-3) moved to within 3 points of the first-place Checkers (30-18-2-3).

After failing to beat Checkers goaltender John Muse on 32 shots in regulation and overtime, Darren Haydar, Michael Davies and Kevin Connauton scored in the shootout.

Wolves goaltender Eddie Lack stopped 31 shots in regulation and overtime as well as four of six attempts in the shootout to earn his third shutout of the year.

“I thought it was a great hockey game between two good teams,” said Wolves coach Craig MacTavish. “We were finally able to win a shootout and Eddie played unbelievable in net for us.”

The Wolves host the Checkers at 3 p.m. today.
