Hampshire crash sends two to hospital
A Wednesday morning accident in Hampshire that involved a semitrailer, a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle sent two people to Elgin hospitals, authorities said.
The woman driving the SUV was taken to Sherman Hospital, while the man driving the semitrailer was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital, said Lt. Brian Marlowe of the Hampshire Fire Protection District.
The man driving the pickup truck refused medical attention and was treated at the scene, Marlowe said, adding he did not know the extent of anyone's injuries.
The accident occurred at U.S. 20 and the entrance to Interstate 90, and had traffic moving slowly through the area.
A cause for the accident, which knocked down a traffic light, has not been determined.
βIt appears the SUV was sitting at the light when the accident happened,β Marlowe said. βI don't know who hit who. I can't tell you how it happened.β
Acting Police Chief Brian Thompson could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
After the accident, eastbound traffic on U.S. 20 was diverted onto Getty Road, while westbound traffic was getting through the intersection with the tollway ramp.
Vehicles exiting the tollway were being diverted to go east on U.S. 20. No vehicles were allowed to enter the tollway from the U.S. 20 interchange.
