Mount Prospect teen struck and killed by car

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Tuesday night in Mount Prospect.

According to a news release from the Mount Prospect police, Matthew Svedman, 19, of Mount Prospect was struck about 8:25 p.m. near Rand Road and Prospect Manor Avenue. Svedman died about an hour later at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Witnesses told police Svedman stepped into the roadway just before he was struck by a southbound car on Prospect Manor Avenue, according to the news release. A 56-year-old woman driving the car was not injured.

Kurt Laasko, principal at Prospect High School, announced that Svedman was a 2011 graduate, and that Svedman’s brother and sister were both graduates of the high school.

He said many students, staff and families involved with the high school will be affected by the death, and that family members should seek assistance in the high school student services office to get help if needed.

“This news is very upsetting to all of us,” he said. “Our hearts are with the Svedman family at this time, and I’m sure you will keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

The investigation continues. Police ask anyone who has additional information about the crash to call (847) 870-5656.
