Barrington events serving up winter fun

Winter is moving along at a pretty good pace now, but the village of Barrington has scheduled a few fun events to help area residents make it the rest of the way to St. Patrick’s Day and spring.

The third annual “Love Barrington” Family FunFest, sponsored by the village and Barrington Cultural Commission, will kick these off just before Valentine’s Day.

The free event, open to the young and young at heart, will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Barrington Room of the Langendorf Park Recreation Center, 235 Lions Drive.

At 2 p.m., DeeDee Gallagher will get the crowd moving with the dancing fun of her program, “Move to the Groove.”

She’ll be followed at 2:30 p.m. by Dennis DeBondt — the “Amazing-Hilarious-Dynamic-Inspiring Magician” — who at 6 foot 7 will bring fun to new heights.

The fest’s grand finale will be a performance by the Barrington Children’s Choir, followed by a short workshop in which some of the older choristers will teach children a special valentine song which will then be performed for the crowd.

The other winter events are aimed at a somewhat older crowd.

The Winter Wine Walk will occur from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3, sponsored by the Park Avenue Wine Bar and the merchants along Cook and Station streets in downtown Barrington.

The participating stores and restaurants — including Grassroots, Angelina’s, Barrington Flower Shop, Mia Sorella and the Park Avenue Wine Bar — encourage residents to drop by to shop, sip, nibble and stay for dinner.

And St. Patrick’s Day officially will be ushered in with the two-day Barrington Celtic Fest beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17.

A huge heated tent will be set up on Park Avenue alongside McGonigal’s Pub and the Park Avenue Wine Bar so that patrons can enjoy the celebration outdoors without threat from the fickle March weather.

There will be lots of entertainment and activities inside McGonigal’s Pub all day on both days, including special guests, bagpipers and other surprises.
