Waukegan man held on drug, weapon charges

Waukegan police arrested a man after finding a handgun and drugs at his home, authorities said.

Police said officers executed a search warrant on the 600 block of Walnut Street and seized 28.8 grams of heroin, a .32-caliber handgun, and more than $5,000.

The resident, Jerrold A. Hayes, 43, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a school and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Hayes, originally from Chicago, has been arrested 15 previous times for drugs along with other crimes, authorities said.

He is being held at the Lake County jail on a $50,000 bail.

Waukegan Police Chief Daniel Greathouse called the arrested “great police work.”

“I urge all residents to contact the police to report suspected drug houses,” Greathouse said in a news release. “Together, we can impact this criminal activity and hopefully remove this element from our community.”
