Woman dies after being struck by vehicle in Elgin

A 40-year-old Elgin woman died late Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle as she crossed an Elgin street earlier in the evening, according to police.

Ana Ordonez, of the 0-99 block of Liberty Street, was crossing at Summit Street about a block east of Dundee Avenue when she was struck at about 6:10 p.m., said Elgin Fire Batallion Chief Bryan McMahan.

The woman suffered severe head trauma after being struck and died later in the night at Sherman Hospital, police said.

Police Department spokeswoman Sue Olafson called the woman's death a “tragic accident” and said charges are unlikely to be filed against the driver of the vehicle.

An initial investigation indicated the woman was at a Laundromat and had crossed the four-lane street to get detergent at Dino's Foods. She was struck by a vehicle as she was returning to the Laundromat, officials said.

Police shut down a stretch of Summit Street for three hours following the accident to investigate, Olafson said.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash, which was not a hit and run.

“We are investigating whether the weather played a role in the accident,” Olafson said.

Fire officials said the roadways were “very slippery.”
