Volo man dies in snowmobile crash in Wauconda

A 39-year-old Volo man died Friday when the snowmobile he was driving struck a cable gate at the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 9:50 p.m. off the marked trails near Fairfield Road north of Gossel Road, according to Lake County Forest Preserve Ranger Police.

Emergency crews from Wauconda administered lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful. Authorities reported that the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The victim’s name was not released early Saturday pending notification of next of kin.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Forest preserve police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
