Libertyville man charged with hate crime at Elmhurst College
An Elmhurst College student is facing a hate crime charge for carving anti-African-American sentiments into a window ledge outside a dormitory, authorities said Tuesday.
Myles G. Burton, 21, of the 1800 block of Cardinal Court, Libertyville, was being held in the DuPage County jail on $50,000 bail.
Prosecutors said Burton carved “KKK” and two other racial epithets into a window ledge outside a residence hall at the college, 190 S. Prospect Ave., during the late-night hours of Dec. 8. Court records show he was arrested Dec. 9, and a grand jury indicted him Thursday.
Desiree Chen, a spokeswoman for the college, confirmed Burton was a student there at the time of his arrest but said she could not release further details. Burton is a former Libertyville High School basketball player.
Elmhurst police did not respond to requests for additional information. Prosecutors said damage to the window ledge was less than $300.
If convicted of a felony hate crime, Burton could be sentenced to probation or two to five years in prison.
His arraignment is set for Monday, Jan. 9.
