Car crashes through Batavia home

A Batavia family was forced to find a place to stay Sunday night after a young woman drove a vehicle through the brick exterior of its home, causing significant damage, according to fire officials.

The driver of the Volkswagen Beetle drove about a half-mile through a bean field before smashing through the rear of the house near the intersection of Bliss and Seavey roads at about 4 p.m., fire officials said.

The woman also drove through a backyard fence before the vehicle came to a stop halfway through the tri-level home, said Batavia Fire Department Batallion Chief Randy Banker.

A daughter of the homeowners was inside when the crash occurred but was not injured, according to fire officials.

The driver of the vehicle was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Banker said.

Fire officials estimated the damage to the house at $25,000, and said the crash damaged the load-bearing walls of the home.

A board-up company was called the home after the crash, and the house was deemed uninhabitable until repairs could be made, Banker said.

The vehicle was also badly damaged in the crash.

The Kane County sheriff’s office was investigating the crash but could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
