Dist. 62 picks Winter Card contest winner

Des Plaines School District 62 President Brenda Murphy awarded first place to Ashton Smith, Chippewa Middle School, in the 2011 District 62 Winter Card Design Contest.

Smith, an eighth-grade student, designed a card featuring wolves in a wintry forest. The Des Plaines Arts Council judged 42 entries on grade appropriate execution, originality, and creativity.

The winning design is featured on the 2011 card that the district distributes during the holiday season. All entries will be displayed from Dec. 2-Jan. 9, at the Des Plaines Public Library. Each artist will receive a participation certificate.

Second- and third-place winners were also honored by the board of education. They are: second place: Emily Kulaga, Central Elementary School, second grade; and third place: Emily Utt, Chippewa Middle School, sixth grade; Julie Choi, Cumberland Elementary School, fifth grade; Elizabeth Jaurigue, Algonquin Middle School, seventh grade; and Natalie Trytko, Chippewa Middle School, sixth grade
