Ex-husband accused of threatening Glen Ellyn woman before her murder
Less than a week before his ex-wife was found slain in her Glen Ellyn home, Juan Granados threatened to harm the woman if she didn't stay with him, authorities said Thursday.
Granados, 33, has not been charged with the homicide of Nancy Bustos, but police say he is a “person of interest” and they want to talk to him.
Bustos, who divorced Granados last year, was found dead in a bathtub at her Briar Street apartment Oct. 16. Since then, authorities have been searching for her ex-husband, whom they believe to be in Mexico.
Prosecutors recently filed a felony intimidation charge accusing Granados of threatening in an Oct. 10 phone call to physically harm Bustos if she didn't “stay with him.”
Glen Ellyn Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer said Bustos was with a friend, who overheard the conversation.
Six days later, the 36-year-old victim's parents called police because they had not heard from her in several days and got no answer at her door, her father has said. Her body was found that morning.
The victim's family said she had been living with Granados and their 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son until he moved out about a month before her death. Police have said the son has special needs and may have been present when Bustos died.
Holmer said federal authorities are assisting in the search for Granados, and evidence examination continues.
“We continue to look,” he said. “We're just trying to be patient and follow up on leads we can follow up on.”
On Wednesday, Bustos' mother filed a petition seeking guardianship of the children, court records show. That case is due in court next month.
