Snow removal crews’ damage to parking garages will cost Wheaton additional $96K this year

A downtown Wheaton parking garage needs extensive repair just two years after it opened because snow removal crews damaged it during last year’s brutal winter, city officials said Monday.

City Manager Don Rose said the work on the structure, at the northwest corner of Willow Avenue and Cross street, will cost more than $96,000 and that the city’s attorneys have looked into whether they can seek at least partial reimbursement from the company.

“The damage was caused by the company plowing the upper deck,” Rose said. “The attorneys are reviewing whether we are able to capture some of that money.”

The work will include floor repairs and sealant work on cracks and joints damaged during the winter, where record snowfalls battered the region.

After an analysis of the damage that prioritized problem areas, city officials sought bids on the project. The work will be done along with work on the city’s other downtown parking garage, 232 W. Wesley St., which was due for its normal maintenance that comes every five years.

Two bids came in Oct. 7 and Chicago-based Harry S. Peterson Co. will perform the work. It is expected to cost $212,577.

City officials set aside $225,000 in the parking fund for the work, which is expected to begin this fall and finish in the spring.
