Cops: Men robbed St. Charles gas station of synthetic pot

Two men in their early 20s have been charged after police say they stole a case of synthetic marijuana and herbal smoking products from a St. Charles gas station late Tuesday night.

Gordon C. Audet and Al S. Smith are also accused of pushing the gas station clerk to the ground and striking him in the head several times when he attempted to intervene, according to police.

The men also stole the clerk’s cellphone and cigarettes from above the register before fleeing on foot, police said.

Audet, 20, of the 1400 block of Indiana Street in St. Charles and Smith, 21, of the 0-99 block of Hickory Lane in Elgin were charged with one count of robbery and once count of theft from a person, both felonies.

Police obtained surveillance video of the robbery, and the manager of the store was able to identify the suspects from the tape.

Officers then went to Audet’s address and found the stolen items as well as the clothing worn by both men in the video, authorities said. The clerk’s cellphone was also recovered.

Both mean appeared in bond court Wednesday, where bail was set at $50,000 for Audet and $25,000 for Smith, according to police.

Both men are due in court on Oct. 13.
