MHS invites cops, firefighters to memorial breakfast

Members of the Mundelein fire and police departments were the guests of honor at Mundelein High School for a breakfast to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Hosted by Superintendent Jody Ware, the Sept. 8 event was meant to highlight the work of the two departments and to thank them for helping to keep the high school environment safe.

Several members of each department were in attendance, including Police Chief Raymond J. Rose and Fire Chief Tim Sashko. Also on hand was officer Chris Callas, the police liaison officer for Mundelein High School.

“It was a time for us to learn more about our own operations and to improve upon them,” Rose said in his remarks to the audience.

The highlight of the event was a video produced by Mundelein High students that focused on the terrorist attacks, including student and faculty recollections of the fateful day.

The video will also be shown to students via in-house morning television news broadcasts.

“We forget that our current students were very young when this happened,” said Stacey Gorman, social studies and world languages department chair.

“They probably don't even know that the extensive security checks at airports, for example, are a direct result of the 9-11 attacks. They think that's the way it always was.”

Members of the Mundelein High leadership team and board of education were also in attendance, as well as student government leaders and class officers.
