Police: Elgin shooting possibly gang-related

A 15-year-old was injured in what police believe was a gang-related shooting Thursday night in Elgin just minutes after shots were fired from one vehicle at another blocks from where the boy was hit.

The boy was shot while on the 200 block of Wilcox Avenue just after 4 p.m. and is expected to survive, according to authorities.

Police received a 911 call 10 minutes before the boy was shot reporting shots fired from one vehicle directed at a second vehicle near the intersection of South Clifton Avenue and Carr Street, said Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson.

No one was hit during the first shooting, but police are investigating whether the two are connected. Police said the bullet that struck the 15-year-old boy was shot from a vehicle on Wilcox Street but did not classify the shooting as a drive-by.

The juvenile was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and was later airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment, Olafson said.

“We are actively pursuing leads,” Olafson said. “There are no suspects at this point.”

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed either shooting or anyone with information to call (847) 289-2700 or leave an anonymous tip at (847) 695-4195. Anonymous tips can also be left online.
