Family bike tour of Des Plaines

Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan, the police department and the Des Plaines Park District invite all bicycle enthusiasts to participate in the third annual Tour De Des Plaines bike ride, being held in conjunction with Des Plaines Fall Fest, Saturday, Sept. 17.

This year’s bike ride, which entails a nine-mile police escorted tour of the city beginning and concluding at Lake Park, Howard and Lee streets, provides the perfect opportunity for families to have fun while getting exercise.

There is no fee to participate in the Tour De Des Plaines, but registration and a helmet is necessary. Representatives of Advocate Lutheran General Trauma Center will be selling helmets for $10 at the registration site which will open at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Lake Park Golf Club House.

The ride will leave at 9 a.m. and will last approximately two hours. Water will be supplied compliments of Illinois American Water. Joe Caputo and Sons and Panera Bread have generously contributed healthy snacks for Tour De Des Plaines participants. The first 200 registered participants will receive a T-shirt and Velcro bike pant straps. Some raffle prizes will be available to registered participants.

Bicyclists may complete the entire course or stop at any point. Police recommend that cyclists be at least 10 years old. Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan, Police Chief Jim Prandini and executive director of the Des Plaines Parks John Hecker are planning on biking and will kickoff the ride.

Preregistration can be made by calling (847) 391-5410 or visit http://desplaines.org/tourdedesplaines to download the form for mailing.

The course will begin and end at Fall Fest which is a three-day family event sponsored by the Des Plaines Park District, the History Center, and the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
