Dawn Patrol: Quick hits to start your day

We're debuting a new Dawn Patrol column today designed to help you conveniently get the top news you need to know as you head out the door. Each weekday by 6 a.m., we'll post our Dawn Patrol column summarizing key stories you may have missed overnight, as well as items breaking this morning — along with a look at weather, traffic and sports. We'll update the column and keep it posted on our home page (look for it in the upper right-hand corner) through the midmorning hours to make it easier for you.

Breaking News

A Round Lake Beach man was arrested in Waukegan Thursday after shooting at - but missing - a man who was visiting an ex-girlfriend. The man also hit the unidentified victim with a baseball bat before he was arrested by police.

Investigators are still searching for the cause of a small fire in a woodworking shop in Geneva. We'll have more details as they become available.

Man dead, daughter hurt in motorcycle crash

A 9-year-old Lake Villa girl is in stable condition today after motorcycle crash over the weekend that killed her father. The 29-year-old Lake Villa man was riding without a helmet, but his daughter, who suffered severe head injuries, was wearing one. Authorities said a 33-year-old Lake Villa woman turned left in front of the motorcycle in Ingleside Saturday night before the motorcycle struck the vehicle, throwing Justin McBride and his daughter from the bike. Barrington “bad mothering” lawsuit doesn't stand

Two Lake Barrington siblings in their 20s who filed a “bad mothering” lawsuit against their mom in 2009 had a ruling against them upheld by the First District Appellate Court. Steve A. Miner, 23, and Kathryn Miner, 20, sought more than $50,000 from their mother in a 2009 lawsuit that alleged she refused to buy her daughter a homecoming dress and did not send her son a care package until his sixth semester of college among other accusations. No charges yet in woman's killing

Police continue today to investigate the killing of a 40-year-old Hanover Park woman, while her husband, who authorities said is a “person of interest,” remains hospitalized. Jeffrey Ferrigan was shot Thursday evening after a showdown with police in Lockport hours after his wife's body was discovered. No charges had been filed as of this morning, but court records indicate Ferrigan was released from jail on a domestic battery charge a day before his wife was found dead in her home. Full story.

Traffic

Traffic delays are prominent throughout most tollways, but people are asked to avoid routes 173 and 41 in Wadsworth because railroad gates stuck in the down position. Those of you heading to the east coast on either planes or trains should check their schedules as Hurricane Irene #8212; which killed 21 people in seven states over the last three days #8212; forced closures everywhere. O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport canceled over 370 flights to the east coast, while Amtrak canceled a handful or trains destined for the east coast. Full traffic.

Weather

Another beautiful day is on tap today with highs in the upper 70s or low 80s and no rain expected. The next chance for rain isn't until overnight Tuesday. Full weather.

Viciedo smacks homer in 2nd big league at-bat

Dayan Viciedo's long awaited major league debut with the White Sox may leave fans second guessing the management's decision not to bring him into the big leagues sooner. The 22-year-old right fielder hit a three-run homer in his second at-bat. Viciedo hammered International League pitching for months while playing for the Sox AAA affiliate, but it wasn't until Carol Quentin injured his shoulder that he got his chance to help the Sox win 9-3 over the Mariners. Brewers sweep the Cubs

The Cubs were swept by the NL Central division leading Milwaukee Brewers yesterday as Zack Greinke improved to 10-0 at home at Miller Park. Greinke did not allow a Cubs' hit until the middle of the 5th inning of the Brewers' 3-2 victory, when Marlon Byrd reached base on a blooper. Full story.
