Lincolnshire garbage pickup service could cost less

Lincolnshire residents could pay less for garbage removal under plans being weighed by the village board.

Waste Management has an exclusive contract for residential garbage removal in town. Homeowners now have three options. They can use: their own containers, at a cost of $18.20 a month; 65-gallon Waste Management rolling carts, for $19.64 a month; or 95-gallon Waste Management carts, at a cost of $20.28 a month.

Three new proposals are before the village board. Each contains a variety of garbage-removal options, with fees ranging from $15.80 to $23.80 a month.

Two of the options would limit the amount of trash residents would be allowed to put out on pickup days. Of those, one would force residents to buy stickers, at $2.79 each, for garbage bags, boxes or other waste containers that exceed the pickup limits.

The village board discussed the proposals Monday night during a committee-of-the-whole meeting.

No final decisions were made, but officials are leaning toward a plan that would allow for unlimited garbage removal using Waste Management carts at costs ranging from $16.37 to $18.75 per month, less than what they pay now.

The fees differ based on the size of the cart chosen.

“That's not a bad deal,” Mayor Brett Blomberg said Wednesday. “You don't always get a chance to tell people pricing has changed for the better.”

People would have to use the Waste Management bins, rather than their own garbage cans, Village Manager Bob Irvin said. No stickers would be required for additional bags or boxes of garbage.

The board could vote on the Waste Management proposals at its Sept. 12 meeting.

The Waste Management proposal wouldn't affect commercial garbage removal in Lincolnshire, which is handled by a variety of companies.

A survey about garbage service was included in a recent village newsletter. Residents in 108 households responded, according to a village memo.

Most people said they supply their own garbage containers now, according to the memo. About 70 percent supported proposals that limited waste collection, the memo said.

Comments included by the people who responded to the survey were overwhelmingly positive.

“This is great news! I like it!” one person wrote.

“Limited waste is an important method to encourage people to recycle. We should demand it,” someone else wrote.
