Hoffman Estates committee approves salt contract

The Hoffman Estates Public Works and Utilities Committee voted Monday night to purchase at least 6,000 tons of winter road salt from the North American Salt Co. at a unit price of $60.33 per ton, in an amount not to exceed $434,376 dollars. The committee estimates that approximately 6,100 tons of salt is used per winter season, and notes that the village currently possesses approximately 2,500 tons of salt stored in the dome. The price per ton of salt is the same as last year, yet is significantly lower than the cost from the 2008-2009 winter season. In that year, the village purchased salt from three different vendors at $127, $104 and $137 dollars per ton.
