Gurnee mayhem: 1 stabbed to death in moving vehicle

Mayhem erupted Thursday afternoon in a moving vehicle on Grand Avenue on Gurnee’s west side, with the result being one man stabbed to death and two others injured, police said.

One of the three men in the vehicle was reported in Gurnee police custody. Authorities had yet to provide details about what led to the melee.

Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said one of the men had suffered a stab wound to his neck from “an edged weapon” when he fled to the service area of Anthony Auto Group on Grand Avenue, just east of Almond Road. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Anthony employees summoned police after seeing the wounded man.

Police said another man suffered a stab wound to his hand from the same weapon, and is suspected of killing the other vehicle occupant.

The third injured man may have been struck by the vehicle in which the violence exploded. He was in serious condition at Condell, officials said.

Raul Briseno of Antioch, a salesman at Gurnee Dodge Chrysler, adjacent to Anthony, said he and a co-worker went outside after hearing fire department sirens. He said he first witnessed paramedics removing one of the men from a truck.

“We then see detectives coming out of an undercover Buick, guns drawn, and they told us to back off and head back this way (toward Gurnee Dodge Chrysler),” Briseno said.

He said he and his colleague returned to Gurnee Dodge Chrysler, which went on lockdown during the police activity. Briseno said customers and employees were directed to stay away from the windows.

“We actually had customers coming in as we were doing (lockdown). We’re telling customers, ‘Hey, you leave or come seek cover inside.’ We don’t want you sitting outside in the parking lot or looking at cars. We made it very clear to the customers,” he said.

Patrick said police received a call at 1:16 p.m. about a possible shooting at the Anthony dealership. Police said there was no evidence a gun was used in the dispute in the moving vehicle or that anyone beyond the three men was involved.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the men.
