Lake County sheriff’s deputy injured in Lake Villa crash

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries in a two-car accident while responding to a call near Lake Villa, authorities said.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Skrypek, a 17-year veteran, was driving with his squad car’s emergency lights and sirens activated when a vehicle pulled out in front of him at 1 p.m. Monday on Grand Avenue near Route 83, Lake Villa Police Chief Ron Roth said Tuesday.

The deputy tried to avoid the accident with the other car, a Mercedes-Benz convertible driven by a man in his late 70s or early 80s, Roth said.

“It could have been a lot worse,” he said. “But the deputy did a great job of swerving to try and avoid the crash.”

The deputy and the other driver were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with nonlife-threatening injuries. Skrypek was released from the hospital Monday, but the elderly man remains at Condell.

Roth said the accident remains under investigation and no citations have been issued yet.
