Gurnee lifeguard champs

Gurnee Park District lifeguards won a statewide competition for the third consecutive year Saturday. The action was at the St. Charles Park District for the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s annual “Lifeguard Games.” This year’s competition featured 33 lifeguard teams and seven junior squads. Teams of four competed in eight events that tested proficiency in rescue skills, CPR skills, teamwork, communication, speed, strength and endurance. Taking first place for Gurnee was Lifeguard Team 1 with Ben Abjuela, Zach Drennan, Bethany Drebing and Anne Wright. Also capturing first place was Gurnee’s Junior Lifeguard Team 1 with DJ Bearnod, Ryan Quilty, Ashwin Sanzgiri and Demi Sjong. “I am so proud of my staff for performing well each year in this event,” said Scott Crowe, park district aquatic manager.
