Felon charged with having loaded revolver

A Cook County judge set bail at $75,000 Thursday for a felon who police say admitted having a loaded gun in his possession. Palatine police charged Martell L. Warren, 22, of Milwaukee, Wis., with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and said Warren admitted that the loaded .22 caliber revolver authorities recovered from the glove box of a car he was riding in on Tuesday evening belonged to him.

Palatine police received a call about a possible armed robbery at about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Bill Cotter. The caller described the vehicle, which police spotted in the 1100 block of E. Dundee Road. The police stopped the car, which contained three or four passengers, including Warren, who was sitting in the back seat, Cotter said.

Cotter said Warren admitted to police that he asked another passenger to put the gun in the glove box. Warren also faces a misdemeanor battery charge involving the individual who reported the attempted armed robbery, Cotter said.

It is illegal for a felon to possess a handgun in Illinois.

Warren's background includes a 2008 conviction for armed robbery, for which a Rolling Meadows judge sentenced him to the Cook County Sheriff's Department Impact Incarceration, also known as boot camp, Cotter said.

Warren next appears in court on Aug. 30.
