Geneva to celebrate new disc golf course

Add “play disc golf” to the things one can do at Wheeler Park in Geneva.

The Geneva Park District plans a grand opening tournament Aug. 20 for its newest offering. The course was installed in July around the perimeter of the park, which lies on the west side of Route 31 south of Stevens Street.

“People reached out to us” to get a course, said Mike Contreras, the district’s athletics supervisor.

People can play The Links for free. The 18-hole course cost the district $8,500, and it hopes to recoup some of that cost with organized leagues and tournaments, Contreras said.

The first night it offered a men’s league, 12 guys showed up; the next week, there were 28, Contreras said. That jibes with his experience that the sport is an “up and coming” trend in the area. The Ultimate Frisbee Club of Geneva High School had already been using Wheeler Park, he said. “Any given time when we are out there it is pretty packed,” he said of the course.

The first hole is located near the Stone Creek Miniature Golf Course.

The Aug. 20 grand opening is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration for the tournament starts at 10 a.m. The fee is $10 per team, which includes a disc. There will be advanced, intermediate and novice divisions.

The random doubles league meets at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday nights. It costs $6 a person.
