Upgrades on horizon for Carol Stream’s McCaslin Park

An estimated $3.7 million project to upgrade McCaslin Park in Carol Stream is set to begin by the end of the month.

It’s one part of a major park improvement plan approved by voters in a $37 million referendum push in 2010.

Major upgrades at the 28-acre park at North Avenue and St. Charles Road will include rearranging four baseball/softball diamonds so they’ll now face outward from a central building with concessions and bathrooms.

Officials have said the new layout will save money on field lighting costs. It also will benefit park users, Executive Director Arnie Biondo said.

“Nobody has a long walk to buy a soda pop or a long walk to the bathroom,” Biondo said. “It will be very convenient for spectators and players.”

Plans also call for installation of synthetic turf to help reduce the number of rainouts at the ball fields, which are host to youth baseball and softball, and men’s and women’s softball.

McCaslin Park also includes two soccer fields, a cricket court, and four basketball courts. The 18-hole Coyote Crossing Mini Golf course opened in 2004.

Park district staff has requested bids for the project work, and responses from interested contractors are expected by next Tuesday.

Biondo said construction would follow a “pretty aggressive” schedule, and work is expected to be complete by Memorial Day weekend next year.
