The Hoffman Estates Police Department will begin issuing citations on Sunday to drivers who run the red light at the Barrington and Higgins roads intersection.

To coincide with National Stop on Red Week, the police department will activate its first red-light cameras for ticket purposes. The cameras have been in place at the intersection since July, said Lt. J.C. Pez, but drivers who ran red lights there have gotten only warnings.

"Until now, violators have been given warning citations," he added. "Now we will start giving fines."

The red-light camera activates when a motion is detected and captures two images and a video of a vehicle that enters the intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. The violation will be reviewed by a police officer before a notice is issued.

Drivers are subject to a minimum fine of $100 and will receive a notice in the mail. Drivers who are already in the intersection when the light changes are not considered violators.

Also, the cameras will not photograph drivers who make right turns where right turns are not prohibited in the intersection.

"When we conducted a survey, it was determined that this intersection is one of the problem intersections," said Sgt. Darin Felgenhauer.

The police department has plans to put red-light cameras at other Hoffman Estates intersections and is conducting surveys to determine where they will be installed.
