When laws broken, accept consequences

The Daily Herald reported July 15 that protesters upset with Taco Bell’s decision to fire four of its employees picketed the Rolling Meadows restaurant. Indeed it is every American citizen’s right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. Apparently the workers’ Social Security numbers didn’t pass muster, suggesting they might not have followed the legal route to enter this country.

An organizer of the protest, Tim Bell, references employers’ responsibility to verify an employee’s status before he is hired, but no mention is made to employee responsibility and falsifying information. If their termination is based solely on immigration status and it is determined they are here legally, then yes, Mr. Bell and Mr. Trejo, I support your efforts to draw attention to the matter. Equally, if it is concluded that laws have been broken, will you still agree that “our community feels disrespected” and abide by the consequences?

In the meantime, chalupas and tacos sound delicious and I know where I am going for lunch.
