$1 million warrant in Great America gun case

A $1 million arrest warrant was issued Monday for an Indiana man who failed to appear in a Lake County courtroom to face allegations he tried to bring a gun into Six Flags Great America.

It is the second time Arthur Olvera, 21, believed to be living in Griffith, Ind., has failed to appear at a scheduled court date stemming from his May 8 arrest outside the Gurnee theme park.

Authorities say Olvera and a female companion were about to enter the park when he refused to walk through an entrance metal detector. Security officers were questioning him and the woman when they turned and ran for the parking lot, police said.

The security officers contacted a Gurnee police officer patrolling the lot, who stopped the pair as they were getting into a pickup truck. Police said a .40 caliber pistol was found under the seat of the truck and Olvera admitted the gun was in his pants as the couple approached the front gate.

Olvera was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and was released after posting $1,000 in cash for bond.

He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment June 17, but failed to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on July 25.

Olvera is scheduled to go on trial Aug. 8. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
