Lil has been a resident of Sugar Grove for forty-four years, and runs the Sugar Grove Township Community House voluntarily.
Lil Adams has worked to make Sugar Grove a better place since she moved to town 44 years ago.
Whether it was volunteering at her children's school, her church, the Community House or the Corn Boil, Adams has put heart, soul and strength into numerous projects.
For that, she was named the 2011 Sugar Grove Citizen of the Year on Friday night.
The award, which is bestowed by the village and the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is kept a surprise, was announced at the town's annual Corn Boil party.
Adams and her husband, Tom, moved to Sugar Grove in 1967. Tom died in 1997. She has two sons and three granddaughters.
The Adamses joined Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, where she served as a church trustee. Adams also was in the PTA and the Sugar Grove Lions Club.
Comments on the forms nominating Adams included, “Everyone in Sugar Grove knows Lil — she is synonymous with the Community Building,” and “Lil is a Sugar Grove institution, with an obvious love for her community and a great heart for service.”
“Truly, Lil Adams exemplifies the spirit of what makes Sugar Grove a great place to do business and live,” said Shari Baum, director of the chamber, in a prepared statement.
The first Citizen of the Year award was bestowed in 1998. It recognizes people and groups that best exemplify a “pioneering spirit” that helps the village prosper.
