Lightning strikes Palatine apartment building

The Palatine Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in a four-unit apartment building on the 1200 block of East Inverrary Lane at 9 a.m. Friday

According to a news release, crews found smoke coming from the roof and eave areas, but no flames. Firefighters ventilated the roof and contained the smoke damage to the attic area.

Based on small areas of charring in insulation and roofing material, crews determined the smoke originated from a lightning strike during the storm overnight. Palatine Fire Department investigators estimated roof and attic damage at $5,000.

All units are habitable and no injuries were reported, officials said.
