Speed tables can’t replace crossing guards

It will never cease to amaze me how things can get so messed up when a government agency gets involved in things.

The nonthinking Carpentersville trustees who laid off five crossing guards to save $40,000 a year is one of those “things.” And now, the village board is going to do a “study” to determine if speed bumps, speed tables or roundabouts would help make up for the loss of five crossing guards. And, of course, add on “no parking” zones near the crossings.

Maybe Trustee Paul Humpfer ought to do a study on how much it will cost the village if any student gets hit because a driver flies through a speed bump, speed table or the famous roundabout that few in the Midwest even know how to use.

How many officers will have to be hired to monitor these alternatives? With the cost of a speed table to be $5,000 to $10,000 plus the labor and the infamous cost overrides that anything the government gets involved in comes with, anyone with any common sense can see that this proposal is preposterous.

I salute parents at the Sunny Hill Elementary School and the district nurse who created the Walking School Bus. Run for office, parents, and get rid of the excess baggage that is flooding our government, from the local levels all the way up to the White House.
