New taxicab voucher program for seniors, disabled

Starting Monday, Des Plaines will implement a new Subsidized Taxi Cab Voucher Program providing a $3 discount to eligible senior residents 65 years or older and people with disabilities.

The current purple or blue subsidized taxicab program cards will not be accepted after Monday.

To register for the new program, residents must provide proof of residency, age and disability with the appropriate documentation — a state ID, current driver’s license, water bill, birth certificate, passport, current Social Security disability statement or state of Illinois placard application signed by their physician.

Applications are being accepted at the city’s Health and Human Services department from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at city hall, 1420 Miner St., and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Highway.

An eligible resident will be issued a maximum of 30 vouchers at a time. Additional vouchers will not be issued until previous vouchers are used. The vouchers do not expire and will list the taxicab companies participating in the program.
