Hoffman Estates man gets 4 years for fatal crash

A Cook County judge sentenced a 21-year-old Hoffman Estates man to four years in prison Monday after he pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI.

Last month, Cook County Judge Thomas Fecarotta revoked the bond of 21-year-old Jay Yi for failure to comply with conditions of the $200,000 bond imposed on him following an early morning single-car crash last November that killed his passenger, 20-year-old Conant High School graduate Christopher Vega.

The sentencing came with a recommendation from Fecarotta for the Illinois Department of Corrections Impact Incarceration Program, also known as boot camp.

Yi had a blood-alcohol concentration of .191 — more than twice the legal threshold — at the time of the crash, which occurred at the Arlington Heights Road exit of the westbound Jane Addams Tollway, authorities said. While he was on bond, Yi, who had no criminal background or traffic violations, failed to meet with pretrial service officers and failed two tests for marijuana, authorities said.

Boot camp consists of military-style training, substance abuse counseling, life skills training and education. Candidates must be approved by IDOC and await an opening.

If Yi is admitted to the 120-day program but fails to complete it, or if he is not admitted to the program, he must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.
