ManorCare of Elk Grove recognizes volunteers at appreciation event

On Wednesday, June 22, ManorCare of Elk Grove Village hosted a volunteer appreciation event, “Volunteers are Everyday Heroes.”

There were 25 volunteers in attendance and recognized: individual volunteers, youth groups, community groups, church volunteers and time and talent volunteers along with patient and family volunteers.

Some of the tasks volunteers are involved in at ManorCare are: assisting in groups, games, crafts, cooking, etc.; providing religious services, devotions or delivering Communion; assisting therapy with transporting and other tasks; visiting patients; providing music programs; providing community or intergenerational contact; scouting troops; Elk Grove Library; Trinity Lutheran Servant Learning Class; Conant High School Learning Through Community Action Program; Northwest Filipino Baptist Day Care; Motorola Retirees; St. Matthew Prayer Shawl Mission; sharing time and talent; compiling and delivering joke sheets; crocheting blankets and afghans; sewing bags for walkers; prayer shawls; flower delivery mission; preparing craft supplies; and pet visits.

ManorCare of Elk Grove Village recognized its volunteers with an American “picnic-style” dinner to compliment the red, white and blue “Everyday Heroes” theme. Volunteers received certificates and a small gift of appreciation.

The Volunteers of the Year were given special recognition, and they are:

Sue Alberger, Volunteer of the Year: Alberger has been volunteering at ManorCare of Elk Grove Village since 2004. Before that, her mother was a resident and she visited frequently, often joining her mom in activities and lending a hand. She is a talented pianist and performs for a monthly “Piano Bar with Susie” event. She volunteers on Fridays, hosting a table in bingo to provide help to those who need assistance in order to play. Also, Tuesday afternoons she has been involved in everything from gardening to gaming to bowling, cooking, outings — everything! She comes early for her volunteer assignment and spends time visiting with a number of patients, making connections with so many.

Stephe Worobec, Resident Volunteer of the Year: Worobec is a very spiritual person who quietly lives her faith by helping others. She often offers to help in the activities department by keeping score in games, assisting others who need help in crafts, or doing other small tasks. She has taken it upon herself to visit some of our residents, who are not able to come out of their rooms, including some hospice patients, talking with them or reading to them. She makes a point to greet newcomers and is smiling and encouraging to her fellow residents.
