Barrington man faces rape charges

A 20-year-old Barrington man was jailed Saturday on charges he raped a 16-year-old acquaintance during the July 11 power outage.

Judge Sam Betar set bail for Santiago F. Alvarez, of the 200 block of Coolidge Ave., at $300,000 for the sexual assault. During a bond hearing Saturday morning, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Lelsey Gool said the attack took place on the evening of July 11 at Alvarez’s Barrington house, which was without power due to the day’s storms.

According to a report by Barrington police read in court, the girl, who’s home was also without power, had helped Alvarez fill out an employment application earlier in the day. She later saw Alvarez outside his home while she was walking to meet friends where she was to stay the night. According to police reports, Alvarez invited her into the darkened home for something to drink, at which time he pushed her into another room and attacked her.

After the attack, the girl walked to a nearby gas station and met her friends who, according to police, described the girl as “visibly upset” and “heavily bleeding.”

The girl’s mother reported the attack to Barrington police on Wednesday and police arrested Alvarez on Friday. Alvarez was being held at Cook County Jail. His next court hearing is set for Aug. 10 at the Rolling Meadows Court House.
