Lights at Glenbard West totally unfair

We live on Hawthorne, about three blocks west of Glenbard West High School. Even though we don’t live in the immediate neighborhood, we firmly believe that the installation of lights and a sound system at Memorial Field would be a gross imposition on the surrounding neighborhood.

Creating a circus atmosphere and traffic nightmare with a field in use until 10 p.m. six days a week would be totally unfair to area residents, in addition to destroying the ambiance of this beautiful part of Glen Ellyn.

Contrary to the many comments we’ve heard around town, that only old “fogies” are opposed to the lights, we thought it important to provide background on a family that has been involved in sports all their lives. Mom and dad’s background includes swim teams, football teams, golf at the Village Links, cross country skiing, ice skating, soft ball leagues and much more. Our children were nationally ranked speed skaters. Our son played on the Glenbard West golf team, and today is one of the highest ranked marathon runners in DuPage County in his age class.

Those of use who live in the area have been able to witness first-hand the gross intrusion of monstrous light poles with giant flood lights, whenever we happen to drive by the stadium at Wheaton College during a night game. Friends of ours who live over a mile away from the Wheaton field said that the school’s sound system sounds like its right in their living room. If you lived adjacent to Memorial Field, would you want this in your back yard?

I guess we are different, but we always try to think about others and not just ourselves.
