Passenger dies after car accident

A Rockford man was issued three tickets in connection with a car accident near Hampshire that left one of his passengers dead Saturday night, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Police.

Lawan Allen, 20, of Overdene Lane was cited for improper passing, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage after the Pontiac Grand Prix he was driving collided with another car on Route 72 in unincorporated Kane County near Hampshire. The accident happened around 9 p.m. Saturday night, police said.

According to police, Allen was driving east on Route 72 with three passengers when he attempted to pass a semi-truck also going east and hit a car headed west. One of Allen’s passengers, Jerry Crosby, 20, of Rockford, was immediately transported to Provena St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin and later pronounced dead.

The driver of the other car was not injured and was not issued any tickets, police said. Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.
