Recovery requires shared sacrifice

A few short years ago a Republican Congress under a Republican president led us into two unfunded wars, an unfunded Medicare drug benefit and tax cuts for the super rich. The vice-president at that time responded “deficits don’t mean anything, Reagan proved that.”

Now, while attempting to dig ourselves out of the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression, these same guys have done a one-eighty and decided that deficits are not so good after all.

I’ve got news. Nobody thinks deficits “don’t matter” but most people think shared sacrifice is the way to go. Everything should be on the table, including farm subsidies and corresponding price supports, tax breaks for big oil and, yes, those precious tax cuts for the super rich.
