Batavia quilt show features patriotic quilts

The Batavia Depot Museum’s “Threads From Past to Present” Quilt and Textile Show has taken a patriotic turn this year.

It features a traveling exhibit, “Thread Tails and Vapor Trails,” of quilts honoring the 100th anniversary of Naval aviation, as well as patriotic quilts in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the United States.

The theme was picked nearly a year ago. Then quilters dug in their repertoires to find products to display.

“They seem to come through for us every year,” said Carla Hill, curator of the Batavia Depot Museum.

The fifth annual show started Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday in the Batavia Park District’s Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St. Almost 200 historical and contemporary quilts are featured. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for people 11 to 59, $5 for people 60 and older, and free for children 10 and younger.

One of the highlights is a repeat: the “ground zero” quilt by Lois Jarvis. It features more than 700 photos of people who perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center.

On Saturday there will be a sew-in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with participants completing a quilt from start to finish. There is also a quilt and quilting supplies sale, and quilts will be raffled off. Refreshments will be sold, with proceeds benefiting Valley Sheltered Workshop.
