Wasco Nursery goes pink for breast cancer

The Wasco Nursery and Garden Center is going to be very pink Thursday, July 14.

The nursery, 41W781 Route 64 in St. Charles, is part of a nationwide Invincibelle Spirit campaign working to raise $1 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The event, set for 5 to 7 p.m., includes a silent auction, raffle and refreshments.

The Wasco Nursery will also be donating the money it raises to two local organizations, the Delnor Center for Breast Health and LivingWell Cancer Resource Center.

“Last year we had more of a ladies night, which was more of just a fun evening,” said Cheryl Monzingo, marketing manager for Wasco Nursery. “So we thought it would be nice to incorporate that with the nationwide campaign for a more purposeful event.”

The event, called Pink Night, will be filled with pink flowers, the ribbon color of breast cancer. Monzingo said 25 percent of purchases of pink items and 10 percent of anything else purchased will go toward the organizations.

There is no actual cost to attend the event, which Monzingo said she hopes becomes an annual affair people can look forward to each year.

The Invincibelle Spirit campaign is celebrating the world’s first pink Annabelle hydrangea. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has encouraged flower shops around the world to host an event to raise money.

“It is an after-hours event, and it is very nice and peaceful at the garden center in the evening,” Monzingo said. “It’s nice to just come here after all the hustle and bustle in the daytime for a relaxing evening.”
