Suspect in police standoff ordered held on $250,000 bond

A Round Lake Beach man who police said held them at bay for nearly three hours Monday in an armed standoff has been ordered held on $250,000 bond.

Javier Tellez, 19, faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of possession of a stolen firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon without a state Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller said Round Lake Beach police received a 911 call for a verbal argument about 5:34 a.m. from Tellez’s residence in the 900 block of Cedar Lake Road.

As officers were approaching the house, Scheller said, they heard a single gunshot from inside the house.

At the same time, a police dispatcher on the phone with a woman inside the house heard four more gunshots, Scheller said.

The officers fell back and summoned a tactical team from the Northern Illinois Police Emergency Alarm System.

The tactical team surrounded the house and got no response to several phone calls they made to the house, Scheller said.

About 8:30 a.m., Scheller said, Tellez threw a 9 mm handgun through a window and jumped through the same window himself a short time later.

A female inside the house emerged unharmed after Tellez was taken into custody.

The handgun turned out to be stolen during a June 28 burglary to a house in the 200 block of Park Road, Scheller said, and Tellez told police he knew it was stolen when he bought it.

Tellez appeared before Associate Judge Raymond Collins on Tuesday morning and was ordered to return to court July 21.
