Businesses in Lindenhurst can now put up LED signs

Businesses in Lindenhurst now have the option of using LED signs, thanks to a new ordinance approved by the village board.

With feedback from the businesses in town, the village board agreed to support the signs Monday. However, the use of LED signs didn’t come without regulations.

Under the ordinance, an LED sign can have a solid background with one color lettering. No graphics or flashing words are allowed, and movement of letters will be restricted to timing.

“This allows LED signage as an opportunity for businesses, but the restrictions are still strict and stricter than what some of the businesses in Lindenhurst wanted,” Village Administrator Matt Formica said.

To install an LED sign, a business will have to go to the village and obtain a permit.

Formica said the village board has been reviewing sign regulations during the past six months and made several changes to enhance the appearance of signs in the business district.

“We (the village board) will get feedback from the businesses on the regulations and what will help their businesses in terms of signage. If businesses feel it’s too restrictive, then the board might consider changing the ordinance again,” Formica said.

Mayor Susan Lahr said the village board will review the ordinance again in six months to a year.

The new ordinance will go into effect immediately.
