Elgin police: Men rob house while girl is home

An Elgin man and a Rockford man have been charged after police say they broke into an Elgin home Monday morning while a teenage girl was home.

The girl was inside the home on the 100 block of Neutrenton Avenue at about 9:45 a.m. Monday when two men broke glass on the front door of the home and made their way inside, police said.

The girl hid in the basement and called 911, and police arrived on the scene while the men were still in the home, Elgin Police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.

Salvador C. Sarabia, 28, of Elgin and Fidel Romero, 27, of Rockford were charged with residential burglary and are due in court Wednesday morning, police said.

The two suspects stole a large flat screen television and various other items before the arrest was made, police said.

Olafson said one of the men surrendered to police immediately, but the other attempted to run and was captured after a short foot chase.
