Naperville man charged with DUI after I-290 crash

A Naperville parolee who struck two Illinois Department of Transportation vehicles on I-290 Monday morning has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, police said.

Two IDOT workers were injured in the crash.

Police said 32-year-old Chester A. Zmarzlinski was intoxicated while driving a 2006 Dodge Caravan when he veered onto the left shoulder just west of Route 83, struck an IDOT arrow truck, spun out of control and slammed into an IDOT vacuum truck at 10:47 p.m.

Zmarzlinski was airlifted from the scene of the crash on I-290 near Addison and later charged with possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and driving with a revoked license.

He was in serious condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood Monday, while one injured IDOT worker was treated at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village and the other worker was treated at the scene and released for minor injuries.

Zmarzlinski, who formerly lived in Westmont, was on parole for 2009 burglary and retail theft convictions, which he was sentenced to three years in prison for, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.

The crash shut down the westbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway for an extended period of time, but all lanes were open by 1:30 p.m.
