Trial to begin in Rolling Meadows murder

Opening arguments are set to begin Tuesday in the trial of a Chicago man accused of killing rap musician Marquis Lovings in his Rolling Meadows home nearly five years ago.

Patrick Taylor, 42, is on trial in connection with the shooting death of 30-year-old Lovings in August of 2006. Lovings was shot multiple times after prosecutors say Taylor and a co-defendant entered Lovings' unlocked condo at about 9 p.m. Aug. 19, 2006, held the victim and several guests at gunpoint and demanded they hand over money and jewelry.

Authorities say Taylor struck Lovings with a pistol and ordered him to open a safe. When Lovings was unable to do so, he was shot multiple times in the head and torso, authorities said.

Taylor has been charged with capital murder. If the jury convicts Taylor of first-degree murder and of using a firearm in the commission of the crime, he could face a sentence ranging from 45 years to life in prison.

He remains in custody on a $2 million bond.
