Dog dies in Indian Creek house fire

A fire killed a dog at a single-family residence in Indian Creek Wednesday night when no one was home, authorities said.

Several motorists driving in the area of Oakwood Road and Route 45 saw the active fire and placed 911 calls just before 8:30 p.m., said Fire marshal Mike McNally of the Countryside Fire Protection District.

Responding crews saw heavy smoke coming from the back of two-story house when they arrived, and were able to put out the flames in less than 30 minutes, McNally said.

One passer-by who knew the residents of the home notified them of the blaze. They were down the block at the time, McNally said.

The fire appeared to originate from the first floor bedroom. Most of the first floor experienced heat and heavy smoke damage, though major damage was contained to the bedroom and an adjacent bedroom, McNally said.

The building is not habitable, and the family will stay with relatives until repairs are made, McNally said.

There were no injuries to civilians or fire personnel, he said.
