Route 83 reopens following gas leak in Elk Grove Village

Route 83 in Elk Grove Village was shutdown Tuesday morning after a construction crew struck a gas line under the heavily traveled road.

The leak, which led to a response from Elk Grove fire and police departments, as well as Nicor personnel, detoured commuters in the area around Route 83 and Greenleaf Avenue while crews worked to seal it.

The leak in the one-inch service line was sprung at around 8 a.m. when construction contractors working on the intersection cut into the line, said Elk Grove Fire Department Chief David Miller.

Employees at one business downwind from the leak were immediately evacuated, but no injuries or sicknesses were reported.

Fire officials said the leak was fixed in about 90 minutes, allowing the roadway to reopen.
